YTP (YouTube Poop) is an internet meme of absurdist comedy videos.

The capabilities of the new YouTube platform in 2006, accessibility of off-the-shelf video editing packages and the loose enforcement of copyright protection online led to an explosion of this form of content.

Originally though, a small niche audience was intended, as these videos were initially produced for, and in collaboration with a handful of Sheezyart content creators (such as SuperYoshi, DukeOfFortuneMan, etc). As YouTube quickly grew in 2007, the exposure of these videos grew with it.

Notable contributions

Looking back, it's clear that I contributed in significant ways as a result of my early participation.

My thoughts today

I had hoped to see the format become more experimental and less rooted in surreal comedy as years went on (e.g. videos like Distress Call (GuruMediator)). However, the YTP format today is very clearly defined by its specific kind of humour using measurably particular sources, in-jokes, catchphrases and memes.

Other genres (for instance, plunderphonics) interest me more today, and I generally stopped participating in this scene around the early 2010s.

In retrospect, I regret limiting the creative process by taking efforts to more specifically define the format of these videos. While my initial branding efforts were intended to improve exposure and build a sense of community, they ultimately ended up limiting audience expectations.
